Traveling with oxygen has become simplified and more convenient with the advent of portable oxygen concentrators. The key element being “portable”. You no longer have to worry about storing extra oxygen tanks, hauling around the extra weight or other previously undesirable activities just to leave the house.
Not only are portable oxygen concentrators more safe than the compressed oxygen cylinders; they are simple to use and you will never run out of oxygen. The fact is that you can simply plug your portable oxygen concentrator into the DC adapter in your car for road trips or where ever you feel you may want to go and explore.
Depending on your model there are a couple of considerations that you need to know before you hit the road.
Continuous and Pulse Dose Portable Oxygen Concentrators
The SeQual Eclipse 3 – One thing to note is that you cannot run your Eclipse 3 on a setting higher than 2 with the continuous setting while plugged into the DC adapter. The user manual actually suggests that when operating the SeQual Eclipse from the DC power supply, it is recommended that only the pulse mode be used. Also, while operating the Eclipse from the DC power supply, the battery will NOT charge.
The Invacare Solo – Once again, you can not run your Invacare Solo on a setting higher than 2 with the continuous setting while plugged into the DC adapter. The user manual suggests that when operating the Solo from the DC power supply, it is recommended that only the pulse mode be used. The Invacare Solo will charge when it is plugged into the DC adapter. However, the DC input may not be sufficient to charge the battery at all settings if the unit is on and operating. The higher settings will pull too much power in order to charge but it will run and produce the oxygen for your use.
Pulse Dose Only Portable Oxygen Concentrators
The Respironics EverGo comes with two batteries and to run the EverGo using the DC power, make sure you have at least one battery installed. Once you have connecting the DC power adapter, the EverGo will produce the oxygen and also charge the battery as well.
The Invacare XPO2 – when using the DC power adapter the XPO2 will produce the oxygen and also charge the battery. If you have a supplemental battery pack, the DC power adapter can also be used to recharge it as well.
When traveling with your Portable Oxygen Concentrator it is always wise to check your vehicle owners manual to make sure the DC outlet has the correct or strong enough voltage to operate your POC. Now that you have your Portable Oxygen Concentrator it is time to hit the road. Safe travels!!!!
