What is a Pulse Oximeter?

A Pulse Oximeter is a discreet tool that provides a simple method of measuring the oxygen saturation of your blood. Oxygen saturation is just a fancy way of saying how much oxygen the blood is carrying. This is very useful information to determine if your heart/lungs/blood are all working together to deliver oxygen to the rest of your body.

Normal pulse oximeter readings range from 95 to 100 percent, under most circumstances. Values under 90 percent are considered low. Please consult with your physician on what level of oxygen saturation they would like you to maintain.

How much oxygen your body actually needs can affect your current levels.  For example, if you are exercising your muscles will need more oxygen and in turn your readings will be lower. The measurement will vary for you depending on if you are at rest compared to a body in motion. While the 95 to 100 percent range is normal, having readings closer to the lower 90′s during activity is not uncommon.

How do you use a Pulse Oximeter?

It is very easy to use a pulse oximeter.  You will simply place the Pulse Oximeter on your finger tip. To get an accurate reading, a pulse oximeter needs a strong regular pulse in the finger.

If you find you have cold hands or a weak pulse in your fingertips you may have difficulty getting a reliable reading. An irregular heartbeat or even just moving around to much while taking a measurement can also cause difficulty.

For best results it is also recommended to remove any fingernail polish to prevent any potential interference.

Who needs a Pulse Oximeter?

The test isn’t perfect – for example, you could have poor overall blood flow and still a high level of oxygenation. This is why in all cases you should consult your physician. Your physician will be able to explain your particular situation and if you can benefit from using a pulse oximeter to monitor your oxygen levels.

Once you are prescribed, by a qualified physician, that you should have an oxygen concentrator or other forms of oxygen therapy, a pulse oximeter is helpful for self monitoring your oxygen saturation.  Keeping your oxygen saturation within the limits that your doctor has recommended will help prevent further health issues caused by insufficient oxygenation.
